Aamis is an 2019 Assamese language feature film written and directed by Bhaskar Hazarika. The two leads of the movie are Lima Das and Arghadeep Baruah who were both debutants at the time of film release. The movie focuses on a unique concept that was never been explored in Indian Cinema before. It shows a platonic love story between two individuals( Nirmali and Sumon) of different age groups. Nirmali is a woman who is in her mid-30s and she is a pediatrician. Sumon is a man in his mid-20s and is doing his Ph.D. on different food habits of the different northeastern states. They met for the first time when Sumon's friend became sick after consuming meat. Soon after they begin to build up relationships among themselves due to their strange food habits. They both are fond of exploring and tasting different meats from different places.
When I watched the trailer of the movie I felt that something is really strange and weird about the movie. But it never hinted about the unexpected and dark side of the human mind which was showcased in the second half of the film.
The movie starts as a normal love story between two human beings. The first half was a bit slow. But suddenly I felt a change in tone in the film gradually. It just represents a twisted and dark representation of human obsession.
The movie is so unique and a big milestone in the Indian Film Industry, because it focuses on an abstract idea which is never explored before and yet, feels so real and fresh. It shows the dark side of human obsession in the most realistic manner. The background score also plays an important role in the movie because it correctly matches the tone of the film. Some food shots were really amazing. I am really amazed that the Assamese film industry is making such a masterpiece and it can really give tough competitions to many International films.
The storyline, direction, acting performances are top-notch. I cannot digest the fact that Lima Das has never acted in any movies before Aamis, yet she gave such a natural and strong acting performance. I am not able to fit this movie into any particular genre. This movie created such a massive impact on my mind that I kept thinking about Aamis for few days. I am proud of the fact that such a masterpiece is being made in India. Bhaskar Hazarika is a pure magician who wrote and directed such a unique movie.

Aamis is definately an interesting watch. Bhaskar Hazarika is bold and gutsy enough to follow such a storyline and weave a story that will haunt the audience even after the end credits roll.
The performances felt shaky. May be the only drawback I would take from this movie.
But hey, such a non-linear storyline that too from india.
