Sunny Pawar is a brilliant actor. I have first seen him in the award-winning film 'Lion' and then in the Sacred Games as young Ganesh Gaitonde. There is something special about him - his acting skill, smile or cuteness - that will make you crave more, and this film 'Chippa' won't disappoint the audience either.
Chippa, who lives on roadside Kolkata under a tea-selling lady, is turning 10 next day. He gets a letter that happens to be sent by his father, who left him and his mother for another mother resulting in the death of his mother. The letter, he receives, is in Urdu and he doesn't know Urdu,. So on the midnight of the birthday, he decides to escape to find its meaning.
During his night out in the roads of Kolkata, he encounters a variety of people- a taxi-driver, a policeman, an alcoholic rich man with a car, whom he instantly calls his friends. He finds a stray dog that he names 'Pippa' and it becomes a constant companion in his journey. Every now and then, his dream changes. One moment, he wants to be a taxi-driver and in another moment he dreams of becoming a footballer or policemen or a music band-member. He never stops dreaming.
This film is not about poverty or despair. It's an image to the child in you and will surely pluck some chords in your heart and will remind you of your childhood days when nothing puts limitations on your dreams and curiosity.
The director, Safdar Rahman, has beautifully portrayed the life of a kid who has nothing in hand but still finds ways to smile and makes others smile as well.
The use of some old Hindi and Bengali songs playing on radio adds charm to the film. And the background score nicely portrays the carefree attitude of the character. Though the storyline is simple but it will provide a heartwarming experience.
